When your aquarium no longer has a fish for any reason, it poses a danger to your home. Mosquitoes could get in and lay eggs. You could get a newspaper (cardboard and others) to cover it placing a book or anything heavier to hold it in place. This is advisable when you still have no time to empty the water in your aquarium and when you do, you could do it using a dipper (preferably small or any container that fits inside) or draining aquarium hose or an ordinary hose (filling the ordinary hose with water, covering both ends with your thumbs and then dipping the other end inside the aquarium and the other towards a pail (basin and others) on the floor or on the ground <the water will drip down after your thumbs released both ends). I hope this Google article is helpful to you......
